Cops mum today on slaying of Grosse Pointe Park woman

Police weren’t releasing new information today about the investigation into the mysterious strangulation of a Grosse Pointe Park woman, a day after authorities called her husband a person of interest in the case.

Grosse Pointe Park police said they had no additional information Saturday afternoon about Jane Bashara. A spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said no information had been presented to the office on possible charges in the case, in which so many questions remain unanswered.

Bashara, 56, was found Wednesday morning, strangled in the back seat of her Mercedes-Benz SUV in an alley near 7 Mile and Hoover in Detroit, miles from her home, police said. Her husband, Bob Bashara, reported her missing the night before.

Police searched the home where the couple lived, on Middlesex near Korte in Grosse Pointe Park, for about four hours Friday night and removed what appeared to be two computers from the two-story brick house. Police also interviewed Bob Bashara and gave him a polygraph test, with authorities saying he is cooperating with the investigation and has not been charged with any crime.

Detroit Police called Bob Bashara a suspect, but Grosse Pointe Park public safety director David Hiller said Bashara was only a “person of interest.” Hiller said police would not release information about the results of the polygraph test.

Police in both cities are investigating the death, which the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled was a homicide by strangulation.

A steady stream of visitors came to the family’s home Saturday, many bearing food.

A woman who answered the door around 4 p.m. said the family did not wish to speak to reporters and said they knew little more than the news media about the ongoing investigation.

Bob Bashara told the Free Press on Thursday that police were keeping him at an arm’s length and giving him little information about the investigation into the death of his wife of 26 years. “As far as they’re concerned and whatnot, they have to consider me a suspect,” he said.

Funeral services for Jane Bashara, a Mt. Clemens native, were being handled by A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack at Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Her obituary at the funeral home’s Web site said Jane Bashara was a graduate of Central Michigan University who received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Detroit Mercy. She was a senior marketing manager for Kema Services, a Detroit energy consulting, testing and certification company.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms.
